“Impediments to efficient movement” Isolated and rare speed humps can be useful. Placing a series every few hundred feet is excessive. I see many poorly behaved pedestrians, cyclists, and scooters. I see pedestrians walk into traffic without looking up from their cell phones. I am not in favor of slowing down the whole world to address an ever increasing number of oblivious or inconsiderate people. Traffic is already back up in many places due to an overabundance of traffic calming. Strategic and limited fixes for problem locations should be used instead of ubiquitous impediments to efficient movement.
An overuse of regulation will (and probably already is) causing people to compensate elsewhere. An over calmed street may result in higher speeds on the subsequent uncalmed street. Personally, I (a non-car owing
pedestrian) ignore the "improved" 10+ cycle traffic lights and either cross streets at the greatest distance away from traffic lights or at the light during one of the many cycles with no relevant car movement. There are a few intersections where I would welcome new traditional (mimimal cycle) traffic lights but more intersections where the very long waits are a hindrance rather than a help. -- Precinct 5 Reader
